For no reason at all this last week was one big perma-rush. Comedy night on Saturday, last night at home before shifting places again on Sunday (love that expression as it embodies a full mindset), night at the airport on Monday, then playing catch up over the next few days, with church services I agreed to try and attend (Polish masses are brutal in terms of duration, setup and demands placed on its congregation) and last minute holiday shopping thrown in. But this time we actually made it work in terms of stress reduction.
Pro tip 1, suss out what you can get at your destination from people’s wishlist and where. Then save yourself the hassle of having to run around like a headless chicken three hours before having to head off at the airport.
Pro tip 2, if you’re flying out of Finland, the Alepa supermarket at arrivals is open 24/7. It also covers your basic needs in terms of Finnish edibles to bring back: Moomin biscuits, Moomin tea, Salmiakki (salted licorice, beyond gross but makes a great prank gift and even better throat candy. Way cheaper than throat candy in Finland too, where throat pastilles can easily cost 10x more, if you’re incredibly lucky).
But I wanted to do the lens-art challenge, also because of the very warm welcome I received. And for this, I wanted to focus on the people we might not be aware of straight away. The last person at the coffee bar, a lone person coming down the escalator, a person barely visible on your way to the airport. The quiet of the airport itself in the three hours at night in which there are no flights.
So here we are. 🙂

An interesting take on the challenge – the sense of loneliness at the nearly-empty airport is quite unique. It reminds me of the old saying “every picture tells a story”. Thanks once again for joining us!

Thank you. It really does feel strange in some ways. But this is also my third time doing it, so there is a certain familiarity to it at the same time.

Being alone in an airport; I can’t imagine it. Not even a Starbucks open? Your photos are great and definitely show the loneliness you can experience.

Thank you! The Starbucks closes around 9 or so I think and then opens up a few hours after the first flights have already left (I think the first one leaves around 5:30 in the morning). Last time I was there (in February) people were sprawled on the benches of Starbucks while it was closed. This time it looked like they had all been chased away. I’d say there were about 20 people at the airport. So not quite deserted, but it was an eerie feeling just the same. I don’t think I could have done it if I was the only person there.

unique and interesting. To be in an airport, usually bustling with people, must be eerie at night. Interesting though. To see more than the rush would be great. I loved The first one by the railway station. Such a nice gallery.

Thank you! I love seeing places change like that, from busy bars quieting down to hubs of transportation. The railway station one was such a spontaneous shot. Though aren’t they usually the best?! 😀
