Snow

I’ve never been a fan of the snow. When I was a kid I tolerated it in that I enjoyed it – more so if it happened to come down just before Christmas and then had the good grace to disappear by the end of January, or at the very latest, the very first week of February. Even when I lived in Maine, and there was no sign of it melting in January, it was still cool because it was Maine. It wasn’t where I’d grown up, so I wasn’t stuck there, which made everything there new and an adventure.

Something happened in Finland though. Somewhere between the second winter I spent here and now, something snapped in me and I can now feel the snow before it comes down. Even without looking at the weather report, I can predict when it will come down again – even if it had already all melted – just by the way I feel.

I go within.

I get depressed.

I can’t get past freeze mode.

I honestly don’t know where it came from, but it’s a visceral reaction that almost seems to come from another realm. Then again, other than that one year in New England and another year in Chicago, I never really spent much time in an area that was covered in snow up until May. So impossible to tell if it was always there, or this is something new that just happened, prompted by my stay in Finland.

It really makes me wonder if anyone else feels the same.

hmmm, not sure I can speak to that, but it makes sense you would feel down. We also have another commonality. My family lives in NH, on the border of Maine. We don’t travel there in the cold months. Have you ever tried the warm lights?

    1. There’s even more :D. I briefly went to high school in NH my senior year. This is so funny, in the best possible way!

I used to have one of those alarm clocks that start with a very gentle light about half an hour before waking up and then increase. It did help some. If walm lights are something else, I am definitely trying them. I spent most of this winter in Poland, except for three weeks last year and three weeks in 2024. Winter starts in October in my head when I’m here. So hopefully this year I can do something similar.

The lights are also called happy lights. My daughter used to just put her make up on in the morning with one. Seemed to help. You’ll have to read on it. Funny about NH.
